Mentoring Editors Awards – 2014

We are very proud to announce the Suzanne Smith Mentoring Editors Awardees for 2014! This is a new initiative for INANE and the Planning Committee was very gratified by the response to our call for applications. Funds to support these awards came from the Suzanne Smith Development Fund. Each awardee has received a complimentary registration to INANE 2014. In addition, to enhance attendance at the conference, we have paired each awardee with an editor-mentor. Thank you to the mentors for agreeing to serve in this role and congratulations to the award winners!

Mentoring Editors Awardees, INANE 2014 (in alphabetical order)

Suha Ballout, PhD, RN

Suha Ballout, PhD, RN

Suha Ballout, PhD, RN

Suha is on the faculty at Florida International University and is the President of the Pi Alpha Chapter Sigma Theta Tau. She is a reviewer and member of the editorial board of Nursing and Health Sciences. Suha received her PhD from Florida International University in 2013; she has MSN and BSN degrees from the American University of Beirut, Lebanon. Suha was a protégé of Carol “Pat” Patsdaughter, who wrote of Suha’s application:

My doctoral student [Suha Ballout] has had the ‘editiorial bug’ throughout her doctoral education. She also contributes an important cultural perspective to nursing peer review and editing.

Suha was thrilled to be selected for this award and wrote in her application:

Having the opportunity to attend INANE 2014 will provide me with an opportunity to meet esteemed editors and publishers. It will be my first step towards developing my career in editing and publishing.

Serving as Suha’s mentor for INANE 2014 is Lucy Bradley-Springer, Editor-in-Chief of JANAC: The Journal for Nurses in AIDS Care. She notes that she is “happy to step in and fill Pat’s shoes.”

Rita Doumit, PhD, MPH, RN

Rita Doumit, PhD, MPH, RN

Rita Doumit, PhD, MPH, RN

Rita is an Assistant Professor at the Alice Ramez Chagoury School of Nursing, Lebanese American University, Byblos, Lebanon. She received her PhD from Loyola University, Chicago, in 2012. Earlier degrees include two BSNs (Saint Joseph University, Beirut, Lebanon and Illes de France, Paris, France) and MPH from American University in Beirut. On her application, Rita wrote:

My small country in the Middle East, Lebanon, has witnessed life-threatening events for more than 20 years. Given the lack of human and funding resources in my country, I find myself with no mentorship for editing and publishing my scholarly work.

Rita’s area of scholarship is in health-risk behaviors of adolescents with mental health issues and eating disorders. Given this interest, Geri Pearson, Editor of Perspectives on Psychiatric Nursing and an advanced practice nurse with a specialty in adolescent mental health care seemed to be a natural mentor for Rita! When invited to this role she wrote,

I would not be doing what I do as an editor without the wise mentorships of Mary Paquette and Liz Poster.  Happy to do this.

Rita has received financial support from the Research Committee at her School of Nursing to travel to INANE in August. We are grateful for their facilitation of her attendance at INANE 2014.

Jonel Lindsey Gomez, MSN, ARNP, FNP-BC, GNP-BC

Jonel Gomez, MSN, ARNP

Jonel is a double board certified nurse practitioner with expertise in oculoplastics, cosmetic dermatology, and aesthetic medicine. In 2013, she was appointed the Editor-in-Chief of INSIGHT, the official publication of the American Society of Ophthalmic Registered nurses. Jonel received her BSN and MSN from Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers, Florida. Her previous editorial experience includes membership on the editorial board of the Journal of the Dermatology Nurses’ Association and co-author of an ophthalmology textbook for nurses. About her new role, Jonel wrote:

Being Editor-in-Chief represents a new journey in my career. I was thrilled when I discovered INANE (through Google) as I am seeking the support, guidance, and encouragement from those that have more experience.

As a mentor for Jonel, Jan Fulton, editor of Clinical Nurse Specialist: The International Journal for Advanced Nursing Practice has enthusiastically said yes. Jan brings the expertise of an advanced practice nurse as well as being the editor of a society journal–both of which will be beneficial for Jonel.

On a personal note, Jonel is originally from Rangeley, Maine and is delighted to have the chance to travel back to her home state and visit family during the wonderful summer season.

Peggy Chinn, Editor-in-Chief of Advances in Nursing Science (and a pediatric nurse in a former stage of her career) is delighted to serve as Kim’s mentor for INANE 2014. Peggy noted:
