We are very proud to announce the Suzanne Smith Mentoring Editors Awardees for 2016! This is the third year of this initiative for INANE and the Mentoring Editors Awards Committee was extremely gratified by the response to our call for applications, in particular, the increase in the number of international applicants. Funds to support these awards come from the Suzanne Smith Development Fund. Each awardee has received a complimentary registration to INANE 2016. In addition, to enhance their experience at the conference, we have paired each awardee with an editor-mentor. Thank you to the mentors for agreeing to serve in this role and congratulations to the award winners. Judith Aponte, PhD, RN, CCM, CDE, APHN-BC
Judith is Associate Professor and Coordinator, Community/Public Health Nursing Specialization at Hunter-Bellevue School of Nursing in New York City. She received her BS and MS degrees from Hunter College, and PhD from Columbia University. Judith is the new Editor-in-Chief for Hispanic Healthcare International, the official journal of the National Association of Hispanic Nurses. In her application, Judith wrote:
This award will allow me to form partnerships and meet others…as a new Editor-in-Chief, I am interested in collaboration with more experienced editors. I am eager to learn new ways to advance the journal, and expand my thinking as an author, reviewer, and EIC.
In addition to transitioning to a new editor, the journal is also moving to a new publisher, Sage, as of January 1, 2016. Serving as Judith’s mentor is Dr. Carolyn Yucha, Editor-in-Chief of Biological Research in Nursing, also published by Sage. Carolyn is well-known to INANE and host of last year’s conference in Las Vegas, as well as being Dean at UNLV.
Sarah Bird, RN, Grad Cert Nsg Periop., Grad Dip HAdminIS, MACORN, MACN
Sarah is the Perioperative Quality and Education Coordinator at Hobart Private Hospital, Hobart Tasmania Australia. Prior to 2013 she worked as Assistant Director (Perioperative Services) for 15 years. Sarah has been on the Australian College of Operating Room Nurses Board for the past 3 years. In her application Sarah wrote:
I commenced as a ACORN Director in November 2014 and suddenly our editor resigned. I was appointed Editor–my only preparation for the job was utilizing my management skills. It has been a steep learning curve with no editing experience, only my clinical nursing expertise–but I am enjoying the challenge. I wish to learn more of the skills of editorial work and networking with other international editor leaders to ensure that I can produce the best for my nursing readers.
Dr. Marion Broome, Editor-in-Chief of Nursing Outlook and Dean at Duke University College of Nursing is eager to work with Sarah and help her advance her editing knowledge within the structure of INANE.
Gary Mitchell, RN, MSC, Aminstlm, BSC, BA
Gary is a Resident Experience Care Specialist from Four Seasons Health Care in the UK. Gary is currently completing his PhD at Queen’s University Belfast and has occupied editorial roles across three journals: BMJ’s Evidence Based Nursing, Nursing Standard and International Journal of Older People Nursing. Gary also serves as a peer-reviewer for a number of other journals including the Journal of Advanced Nursing and International Journal of Palliative Nursing. Gary has a keen interest in the use of social media to enhance nursing practice. It was for this reason that Shawn Kennedy, Editor-in-Chief of the American Journal of Nursing was delighted to serve as Gary’s mentor for INANE 2016. In his application, Gary wrote:
I am aware of the values of publishing and disseminating best practices in nursing. I remain in practice and want to support others to publish–I aspire to be an editor of a nursing journal.
DaiWai Olson, PhD, RN, CCRN, FNCS
DaiWai began his nursing career almost 30 years ago at Mercy Hospital in Davenport, Iowa. He completed his bachelor’s degree at Teikyo Marycrest University in Davenport Iowa and then moved to Durham, NC and Duke University where he worked as a staff nurse in the Neurocritical Care unit. In 2007, he successfully defended his dissertation on assessment of brain-injured patients and was awarded a PhD from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He was recruited to join the faculty at University of Texas Southwestern in Dallas where he now works as an Associate Professor of Neurology and Neurosurgery, and clinically as an ICU staff nurse. On January 1, 2016, DaiWai became the Editor of the Journal of Neuroscience Nursing. As he wrote in his application:
As a brand new editor, everything is new, shiny, exciting, and scary. I am committed to learning more about editorship and am grateful for INANE. As a novice editor, I am open to every opportunity to learn.
Dr. Kathleen Ahern Gould, Editor-in-Chief of Dimensions of Critical Care Nursing will be serving as DaiWai’s mentor. She said she is very familiar with JNN and honored to participate in this mentoring opportunity.
