Journal for Healthcare Quality (JHQ) is seeking an Associate Editor to join the Journal’s editorial leadership team. Established in 1979, JHQ is the official journal of the National Association for Healthcare Quality (NAHQ).

Position Description

The Associate Editor will help facilitate peer review for submitted manuscripts and assist in driving the Journal’s editorial strategy. In this exciting role, the Associate Editor helps provide the vision, energy, and leadership to produce a bimonthly journal, which provides impactful research and communication about health care quality research through print and electronic media to multiple audiences including clinical investigators, health care executives and managers, nurses, physicians, and other healthcare professionals as well as policy-makers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Partners with the Journal’s Editor-in-Chief to help oversee the peer-review process; works with reviewers and authors to ensure each manuscript worthy of consideration is reviewed in a timely fashion and, if selected for publication is revised until ready for publication
    • Receives approximately 60 manuscripts per year for blinded peer review and assigns reviewers
    • Serves as a reviewer when reviewers assigned to review manuscript are not in agreement on decision regarding manuscript or upon request of Editor or other Associate Editor
    • Provides constructive criticism and suggestions to authors and peer reviewers
    • Makes recommendations to editor: reject, major revision with additional review, minor revision with additional review, accept.
  • Submits complete editorial materials, through Editorial Manager, to the Publisher according to established deadlines
  • Joins scheduled teleconferences with the Editor and Editorial Board.
  • Attends an annual JHQ face-to-face strategy meeting in conjunction with the Publisher, Editor-in-Chief, and leaders from NAHQ
  • Participates in two annual virtual Editorial Board meetings

Education

  • Possess a research-focused doctorate in the health sciences (medicine, nursing, social work, pharmacy, statistics)

Requirements

  • Recognized healthcare professional with healthcare quality expertise
  • The ideal Associate Editor will be a highly organized, motivated individual with the skills and talent to develop a timely, exciting publication fostering excellence in health care quality research.
  • Visibility, a strong network of contacts nationally and internationally, as well as an appreciation of the growing importance of health care audiences globally 
  • Established relationships with health care executives, health care leaders, professional associations/societies, and institutions.
  • Solid editorial and peer review experience in health care quality research, science, scholarship or practice
  • Proven track record of publications as an author; extensive research reviewing and/or editorial board member experience is necessary.
  • Experience with online manuscript submission websites is a plus; must have willingness to learn the web-based Editorial Manager system, JHQs editorial guidelines, and have regular access to a networked computer.
  • This is an independent-contractor position.

Length of appointment

One-year renewal term, Associate Editor appointed by JHQ Editor-in-Chief based on review of application materials with no limits on number of reappointments.

Review of applications will begin on March 1st and will continue until the position is filled. The term of the Associate Editor will begin April 1st.
