Critical Care Nurse seeks an Associate Editor to facilitate essential editorial tasks and to assist with editorial duties in close collaboration with the journal’s current Editor. This is a unique opportunity for the right individual to assume full Editor duties after an agreed-upon trial period.

CCN is a peer-reviewed, bimonthly journal focused on clinical and evidence-based practice. Published by the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses since 1992, CCN provides high acuity, progressive, and critical care nurses with the most accurate, relevant, and timely information about the bedside care of critically and acutely ill patients. The journal’s mission is to keep readers informed about issues that affect their practice and to disseminate reports of evidence-based practice to improve patient outcomes at the bedside.

Working closely with the Editor during a trial period, the Associate Editor helps solicit manuscripts, assists in the review process and in managing a group of contributing editors, helps reconstitute the editorial board, and co-develops strategy to ensure the journal’s continued relevance in an ever-changing health care environment. The Associate Editor may be asked to propose topics worthy of an editorial and, in collaboration with the Editor and Managing Editor, help select content for each issue from a pool of accepted manuscripts. Other tasks may be assigned as this new role develops, including the opportunity to become the journal’s Editor after a part-time trial period as Associate Editor.

The Associate Editor role is a contract opportunity and receives an honorarium and an annual travel allowance.

Qualifications

Qualified individuals will demonstrate:

  • Successful track record in research, writing, and publishing articles in established peer-reviewed nursing journals
  • Personal, professional, and ethical integrity that abides by and prioritizes the highest standards of scholarly publishing
  • Project management skills and a commitment to meeting deadlines
  • Effective written and oral communication skills appropriate for developing rigorous, high-quality content, communicating with authors, and public speaking on behalf of the journal
  • A record of collegiality and collaborative interdisciplinary practice
  • Experience in and commitment to mentoring inexperienced authors
  • Comprehensive knowledge about the clinical specialty of critical care
  • Understanding of the nursing profession and its unique orientation to a biopsychosocial perspective of patient care
  • Recognition of issues important to the practice and profession of nursing, especially across the spectrum of high acuity and critical care
  • Longstanding familiarity with and understanding of AACN’s mission, objectives, programs, and initiatives

Honoring M. Louise Fitzpatrick, EdD, RN, FAAN

We are sad to acknowledge the death of one of nursing’s great leaders – M. Louise Fitzpatrick, EdD, RN, FAAN.  Dr. Fitzpatrick was a prolific writer, mover and shaker. Her work lives on, and stands as a lasting influence on the discipline of nursing. We reached out to our INANE colleague Carol Weingarten, who is Associate Professor at Villanova University, where Dr. Fitzpatrick served as Dean for 40 years. Carol contributed this tribute to their beloved Dean:

M. Louise Fitzpatrick, EdD, RN, FAAN was Connelly Endowed Dean and Professor, as Dean of the College of Nursing for 40 years.  When she came in 1978 at 35 years old, she was the only person with a doctorate at the College of Nursing and the only female Dean at a university whose students were originally all male. She proved herself a leader, mentor, mother, advocate, and friend as she built the College of Nursing into a thriving NLN Center of Excellence with undergraduate through PhD and DNP programs, a Continuing Education program, on-line RN-BSN and BSN Express programs and Centers for Global Health and Obesity Education and Prevention.

She personified professionalism, and made professional involvement and professional development key aspects of nursing education.  She founded Villanova University’s chapter of the Student Nurses’ Association of Pennsylvania (SNAP-Villanova).  Her support helped develop the chapter into an NSNA designated Stellar School with students and advisor active from the local to national levels. She was honored by the state SNAP with its first Lifetime Achievement Award and by NSNA with the Leader of Leaders Award.   She was an excellent writer and nurse historian, as well as a terrific speaker who could connect with small groups or convention sessions of thousands. The power of her impact was recognized by an Honorary Degree from Villanova University in 2015.

Throughout her illness Dean Fitzpatrick remained connected with her friends, colleagues, faculty, alumni and students.  She died peacefully at home and as she lived, ever Dean of the College of Nursing and a champion for Nursing.  Now, in these days since her passing, we are surrounded by her in the College of Nursing and in the building that she made reality and feel the loss of an extraordinary person and leader.

Cyberbullying in the publishing industry

The article in Retraction Watch on March 23, 2017 written by Virginia Barbour, the current chairperson of COPE (Committee on Publication Ethics) points out a number of concerning events that editors and publishers need to watch.  In the piece she describes the cyberbullying that occurred in relation to a complaint sent to COPE about a manuscript issue.  This escalated to serious and upsetting levels that all of COPE leadership watched and tried to intervene in supporting Dr. Barbour.  It raises issues that could be of concern to nursing editors, namely that we are all vulnerable to email attacks and the incivility that can characterize communications that are lawless and without moral compass.  All journal editors receive complaints, but we should all have a process to deal with complaints and disputes. What would you do if you found your editorial role, your journal, your personal life, under attack from a faceless individual that would go to great lengths to discredit your work?  Despite our processes at COPE, the complaints about articles, authors, data, and interpretations, escalated into ad hominem attacks on the people at COPE, most notably Dr. Barbour.  The article in Retraction Watch was her response to this attack that has occurred over the past year.

Peggy Chinn, Leslie Nicoll, and Charon Pierson (also an officer at COPE) began discussing these issues in relation to the Retraction Watch article.  We believe that the wider INANE group needs to start a dialogue around these issues, protecting the editor role and journal integrity, and acknowledging that while nursing is somewhat insulated from these intense cyberattacks, they could occur.  I invite you to begin this discussion, which will continue in Denver in August at our meeting.  I’m giving much thought to these issues as I begin a three year term as the co-chairperson of COPE with Chris Graf, a Wiley publisher in the UK.  I would like us to continue this dialogue!

With a distinguished 65-year history of leadership in nursing science dissemination, Nursing Research is an essential publication for the international nursing community. The journal is disseminated to institutions globally. Nursing Research is the official journal of the Eastern Nursing Research Society and the Western Institute of Nursing.

The Editor-in-Chief provides the vision, energy, and leadership to produce a bimonthly Journal that provides groundbreaking research and communication about nursing research through print and electronic media to multiple nursing audiences including investigators, clinicians, sponsors of nursing research, and policy-makers.

Description

The Editor-in-Chief selects and develops journal content, including original research articles, systematic reviews, methods, editorials, and occasional special issues or supplements.  The Editor-in-Chief manages the manuscript acquisition and peer review process, and appoints and directs the activities of the Editorial Board and Peer-Review Panel. They plan and implement quality improvement initiatives to ensure optimal Editorial Office procedures and standards for scientific publishing, including adherence to publication ethics.  

Key Responsibilities

  • Develops the editorial program for Nursing Research; solicits original articles on key topics as necessary.
  • Oversees the peer-review process; works with reviewers and authors to ensure each manuscript worthy of consideration is reviewed in a  timely fashion and, if selected for publication is revised until ready for publication.
  • Writes editorials and solicits guest editorials.
  • Appoints an Editorial Board;  oversees the Peer-Review Panel, directs their activities and provides annual reviewer reports.
  • Submits complete editorial materials, through Editorial Manager, to the Publisher according to established firm deadlines.
  • Reviews page proofs for each issue and transmits corrections to the publishing office.
  • Oversees the Nursing Research website.
  • Conducts an annual Editorial Board meeting in conjunction with the Publisher at the annual American Academy of Nursing (AAN), held in the fall.

Education

  • Possess a research-focused doctorate in Nursing; or a research doctorate in a related field and undergraduate or graduate degrees in Nursing.

Requirements

  • The Editor-in-Chief must have a broad range of research productivity and a record of successful publication.
  • Experience in quantitative methods, expertise in qualitative methods, and knowledge about nursing informatics/big data research.
  • Publishing experience as an author; extensive research reviewing and/or editorial board member experience is necessary.
  • Computer literacy is required, as is experience with the use of social media.
  • Experience with online manuscript submission websites is a plus; must have willingness to learn Editorial Manager system.
  • Visibility, a strong network of contacts nationally and internationally, as well as an appreciation of the growing importance of nursing audiences globally.  
  • Established relationships with nursing and healthcare leaders and institutions nationally and globally.
  • The ideal Editor-in-Chief will be a highly organized, motivated individual with the skills and talent to develop a timely, exciting publication fostering excellence in nursing research.
  • This is an independent-contractor position (with a flexible compensation package) and the Editor-in-Chief is expected to maintain a primary connection to the field through an active administrative, faculty, or research role.  

Review of applications will begin on April 24, 2017 and will continue until the position is filled. The term of the Editor-in-Chief will begin January 1, 2018, with a gradual transition through the latter half of 2017. Compensation will be commensurate with experience.

Just announced! Journal of Doctoral Nursing Practice

We have received news that the journal Clinical Scholars Review is now the Journal of Doctoral Nursing Practice.  The new Editor-in-Chief is Stephen Ferrara, DNP, FNP, FAANP.  We have updated the listing of the journal in the Journals Directory.

The Journal of Doctoral Nursing Practice is a biannual, peer reviewed publication focused on presenting articles that demonstrate clinical excellence in the application ofjdnp evidence-based practice of doctoral nursing. Articles submitted for consideration discuss clinical practice and patient care; case studies; practice issues, including management, scope of practice, and reimbursement; ethical dilemmas, legal issues, and business practices; and innovative methods of teaching and evaluating advanced practice and profiling the scholarly nature of the clinical practice of nursing. unj_coverThe Society of Urologic Nurses and Associates (SUNA) has issued a call for Editor for Urologic Nursing, SUNA’s official journal. The Editor plays a key role in orchestrating the content of the journal and is essential to the success of the publication. The Editor works closely with SUNA’s Managing Editor and Editorial Coordinator to produce the journal six times per year.

Urologic Nursing, a refereed and clinically focused journal, publishes original articles pertinent to urological nursing and care of the urologic patient. The journal conveys news related to issues and developments in practice, technology, and research. Subject matter may be of interest to the interdisciplinary readership or be of unique relevance to the subspecialist. Through the written media, Urologic Nursing promotes SUNA’s goals: to be recognized by medical professionals, patients, their families, and the public as the nursing authority on collaborative, compassionate, and culturally competent urologic care; to provide opportunities for health care providers to analyze, discuss, and exchange information pertaining to the field of urology; to promote high professional standards of quality and safe patient care; and to enrich the professional lives of SUNA members through education, research, and evidence-based clinical practice.

Prerequisites

  2. Upholds and supports SUNA’s structure, mission, vision, and strategic plan.

Remembering Kathleen Heinrich, PhD, RN, FAAN

kth2_smallI have just learned of the death of our colleague, Kathleen Heinrich, on December 29, 2016. Kathleen died at home in Connecticut with her husband Chris at her side. She had been diagnosed with ovarian cancer in March, 2015.

A twice-tenured professor (University of San Diego, University of Hartford), Kathleen left academia in 2004 to establish her own business, KTH Consulting, with a mission “to prepare individuals, colleague-teams, and faculty groups to present, publish and peer mentor each other’s scholarly success.” Testimonials from colleagues who attended her workshops and seminars attest to her creativity, professional support, and collegiality. Kathy had a passion to change the culture of academia and help educators reach their full potential as scholars, teachers, and mentors.

With Marilyn Oermann, Kathy was a co-editor of the Annual Review of Nursing Education (Springer) for seven years. Kathy was a regular contributor to Nurse Author & Editor and a member of the Editorial Board of Nurse Educator. Her article, “Scholarly Joy-Stealing 10 Mean Games Educators Play and How to Imagine Something Different Together” was published in the January, 2017 issue of the journal (vol. 42, no. 1, pp. 1-2).

Kathy was a graduate of St. Anselm’s College (BSN, 1973), Boston University (MSN, 1976), and the University of Connecticut (PhD, Higher Education, 1988). She was inducted into the American Academy of Nursing in 2014.
